Washington, DC, draws its water supply primarily from the Potomac River, treated through the District's filtration facilities. While the water meets federal safety standards, it carries measurable mineral content (including calcium and magnesium) that qualifies it as moderately hard. Over time, hard water accelerates scale buildup in pipes, water heaters, and appliances, reducing efficiency and shortening equipment lifespan. In older DC homes with aging copper or galvanized pipes, the effects compound faster.
A water softener addresses hardness at the source, treating water before it reaches your fixtures and appliances. Roto-Rooter installs and services a full range of water softening systems for DC homeowners:

I really enjoyed meeting your tech. He was very polite. I was just thrown off guard of the price but when you are in a bind, you have ... to pay the cost (smile). I will explore to see if there are cheaper companies out there, but know when in a bind, and need right-a-way, you are the 1st on my list.

My technician was Khiangte (#7909) He was very respectful of my home, putting on booties before he came inside and laying tarp on the floor before wheeling in his equipment. ... He quickly identified the problem and cleared it, staying while I ran the water from various sources in order to make sure there weren't any other problems. I normally don't write reviews or leave feedback, but I feel like Khiangte should be recognized by your company for being such an excellent representative of Roto-Rooter.

We experienced a terrible problem where the water from the kitchen sink filled up the bathtub and the toilet. We had already seen one plumber who couldn't help us ... but promised someone could come the next morning and find out what was going on. We couldn't wait. James Lian, the service technician came with all his equipment and a smile on his face. He was very pleasant and professional. He found out what was going on and quickly fixed it. We were so impressed and so happy. What amazing service!! Special kudos to your company for hiring such capable, friendly and hard-working people. I am a very happy customer. Thank you very much. I called in a panic after heavy rain and a sump pump failure at my mother’s home. I was able to get an appointment the same day which was ... great. Technician arrived, was pleasant and knowledgeable. He removed old pump, cleaned the debris and standing water in it, and installed a new sumppump. I still need to get top tank portion installed but I’m glad to have a functioning sump pump with more rain coming.

On Sunday evening, after torrential rains in the DMV, our aging water heater decided to die. Plumbers everywhere had lines backing up all over town Monday. We'd used Roto Rooter ... when we had that problem, but never plumbing needs. But Roto Rooter promised they would get someone to us that day-and they did-an hour earlier than expected. The heater could not be relit or salvaged. Within 4.5 hours, we were back in business with a brand new water heater, heavy duty copper lines, properly run chimney exhaust, and all. I could not be happier with the servicemen or the service provided. Though an additional man had to be called in, this tag team did not miss a beat, and no time was wasted. Now I know Roto Rooter does much more that clear lines, and do it well!
My repair person did an excellent job. He told me he would fix it having identified the problem right away. He did! Thank you.
Outstanding in all area. A true blessing. Haven't had a plumber like him before. He must love what he does.!
The plumber was extremely knowledgeable and courteous. He worked with me to figure out how to deal with an issue emanating from my neighbor's unit.

Washington, DC's water supply draws from the Potomac River and is treated through the District's filtration system. While safe to drink, DC water carries moderate mineral content that accelerates sediment buildup inside water heater tanks. Combined with the age of much of the city's housing stock, water heater issues are among the most common service calls Roto-Rooter receives across the District.
If your water heater is showing any of the following signs, don't wait:
Roto-Rooter services all major water heater types, including traditional tank units, tankless systems, gas, electric, and hybrid heat pump models. Our plumbers assess each unit thoroughly before recommending repair or replacement, prioritizing the solution that makes the most sense for your home and budget.
When repair is viable, we'll fix it. When replacement is the smarter long-term call, we'll tell you honestly and handle the installation the same day in most cases.

Slow or blocked drains are one of the most frequent plumbing complaints in DC households, and one of the most commonly underestimated. What starts as a minor inconvenience can develop into a backed-up sewer line or water damage if left unaddressed.
Common signs your drains need professional attention:
DC's older rowhouses and brownstones frequently contain cast iron and clay drain pipes that have narrowed over decades of buildup. Grease, soap residue, hair, and mineral deposits accumulate along pipe walls, reducing flow and creating conditions for recurring blockages.
Root intrusion is a serious concern in residential neighborhoods with mature tree cover, particularly in areas like Petworth, Brookland, and Anacostia. Tree roots seek out pipe joints and cracks, and once inside, they expand rapidly and cause damage.
Roto-Rooter uses professional-grade equipment (including water jetting and motorized drain augers) to fully clear blockages rather than temporarily displacing them. Store-bought chemical drain cleaners rarely solve the underlying problem. They can also corrode aging pipe materials, creating larger issues down the line.
Call 202-291-2113 or schedule service online to get your drains cleared by a licensed DC plumber.
A failing sewer line is one of the most serious plumbing problems a DC property owner can face. Left unaddressed, sewer issues create health hazards, structural damage, and costly repairs that compound over time. Washington's aging sewer infrastructure (much of it a combined stormwater and sanitary system) places additional strain on residential laterals throughout the District.
Roto-Rooter uses video camera inspection technology to assess sewer lines accurately before recommending any repair. A camera is inserted directly into the line, giving our plumbers a real-time view of blockages, cracks, root intrusion, or pipe collapse. This eliminates guesswork and ensures the right solution is applied the first time.
Where full excavation was once the only option, trenchless repair methods now allow Roto-Rooter to rehabilitate or replace damaged sewer lines with minimal disruption to your yard, driveway, or landscaping.
